What Is SCADA? Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Explained
SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) is software and hardware that monitor and control industrial equipment across a site or region. Operators read live values on a screen and send commands to pumps, valves, and motors from one control room.
A SCADA system pulls data from sensors and programmable logic controllers on the equipment, then presents it to operators through a human-machine interface (HMI). Alarms fire when a reading crosses a limit, and the history is logged for later analysis. One screen replaces a round the operators would otherwise walk for hours.
Utilities, water treatment, oil and gas, and large factories rely on SCADA because their equipment is spread out and runs around the clock. A concrete example: a water utility watches pressure and flow across dozens of pumping stations. When a pipe bursts overnight, the pressure drop triggers an alarm, and the operator reroutes flow and dispatches a crew before customers lose service.
SCADA covers wide, distributed sites; a distributed control system (DCS) does similar work inside a single plant. The two overlap, and modern platforms blur the line. Common vendors include Siemens, Schneider Electric, and Inductive Automation.
Why it matters for custom software
Older SCADA setups often lock data inside a proprietary screen no other system can read.
