What Is an MES? Manufacturing Execution System, Explained

A manufacturing execution system (MES) is software that tracks and controls production on the factory floor in real time, from raw material to finished goods. It sits between the ERP that plans orders and the machines that make them.

An MES records what happens during production: which work order ran on which line, how long each step took, what the operator scanned, and where a batch is right now. It enforces the route a product must follow and blocks the next step until the current one passes. Managers get a live view of the floor instead of walking it, and every unit keeps a genealogy of how it was made.

Discrete manufacturers, food and beverage plants, and pharmaceutical and electronics producers all run some form of MES. A concrete example: an electronics assembler scans each board at every station. If a board reaches soldering without passing inspection, the MES stops the line and flags it, so a defect never travels three stations downstream before anyone notices.

The ISA-95 standard defines how an MES exchanges data with the business systems above it and the control systems below it. Common products include Siemens Opcenter, Rockwell FactoryTalk, and AVEVA.
