What Is IIoT? Industrial Internet of Things, Explained

The industrial internet of things (IIoT) is the network of connected sensors, machines, and controllers in factories, warehouses, and infrastructure. They stream data about how equipment runs, so teams can act on it instead of guessing.

IIoT is the industrial side of the broader internet of things (IoT). Sensors measure temperature, vibration, pressure, and location, then send those readings over a network to software that stores, charts, and reacts to them. The point is not the sensor; it is the decision the data enables, like servicing a motor before it fails.

Manufacturers, logistics operators, energy companies, and building managers use IIoT to see equipment they used to check by hand. A concrete example: a cold-chain carrier fits temperature and door sensors to its trailers. If a reefer unit drifts warm on a long haul, an alert reaches the driver and dispatcher within minutes, and the load of frozen goods is saved instead of written off.

IIoT overlaps with SCADA and MES but reaches wider, often to cloud analytics and machine learning. Edge devices increasingly filter data on site before sending it up, which cuts bandwidth and lag. Common building blocks include MQTT messaging and platforms from AWS, Azure, and Siemens.

Why it matters for custom software

A sensor that streams to a dashboard nobody reads is wasted money.
