What Is OEE? Overall Equipment Effectiveness, Explained
Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) is a single score that measures how well a machine or line runs compared to its full potential. The formula is availability × performance × quality, expressed as a percentage.
OEE combines three losses into one number. Availability is the share of scheduled time the machine actually runs, cut down by breakdowns and changeovers. Performance is how close it runs to its rated speed. Quality is the share of good parts, minus scrap and rework. Multiply the three and you get one figure between 0 and 100 percent.
An OEE of 100 percent means only good parts, made at full speed, with no stops. In practice that never happens; 85 percent is widely treated as a world-class benchmark for discrete manufacturing, and many plants sit far lower. Production managers use OEE to find where time really leaks: a line that looks busy can still lose a third of its capacity to short, uncounted stops.
A concrete example: a packaging line reports 92 percent availability, 78 percent performance, and 99 percent quality. Its OEE is about 71 percent. The low performance number points straight at micro-stops, so the team knows to chase those before buying a faster machine.
Why it matters for custom software
A number nobody trusts changes nothing.
