What Is FSM? Field Service Management, Explained

FSM (field service management) is software for running work that happens away from the office: scheduling technicians, dispatching them to jobs, tracking work orders, and managing the parts and assets they need on site.

FSM software coordinates a mobile workforce and the jobs it does. The core is scheduling and dispatch: matching the right technician, with the right skills and parts, to the right job at the right time, then routing them there. Around that sit work orders, service histories, parts inventory, and a mobile app the technician uses in the field to capture photos, signatures, and time.

The industries are the obvious ones with people who fix things on location: HVAC, telecoms, utilities, elevators, medical equipment, and industrial maintenance. A refrigeration company with forty engineers uses FSM to see who is free, who is nearest a breakdown, and whether the van already carries the compressor the job needs.

Good field service leans on other systems. Routing draws on a vehicle routing engine and telematics location data; billing and parts flow to and from the ERP; a customer portal shows the appointment window. Tie those together and a technician arrives on time with the right part in hand.

Why it matters for custom software

Packaged FSM tools assume a standard service workflow, and few field operations are standard. A gas-safety check, a fibre install, and a lift inspection each have their own steps, certificates, and compliance records. A custom build encodes your actual process rather than bending it to fit a template. We deliver field service tools through our technical industries and logistics software work, connected to the scheduling, parts, and telematics data the operation already generates.
