What Is Telematics? Vehicle Telemetry and Tracking, Explained
Telematics is the technology that collects and transmits data from vehicles or equipment in the field, usually over a cellular link. In fleets it powers GPS tracking, engine diagnostics, and driver-behavior monitoring from a central screen.
The word joins telecommunications and informatics. A telematics device, often a small box wired to the vehicle or plugged into its diagnostic port, reads location from GPS and operating data from the engine, then sends it to a server over the mobile network. Managers watch the whole fleet on one map, in near real time.
The data goes well past a dot on a map. Telematics reports fuel use, harsh braking, idling, speeding, mileage for maintenance scheduling, and engine fault codes. An insurer may price a policy on it; a haulier may use it to prove a delivery time or clear a driver of a complaint. In many regions the digital tachograph feeds this same picture for legal drive-time compliance.
Fleets of trucks, vans, service vehicles, and heavy plant all run on it. The data usually feeds a vehicle routing engine, a field service management tool, or a TMS, where raw signals turn into decisions.
