What route optimization software solves

Route optimization software answers the vehicle routing problem (VRP): finding the best set of routes for a fleet of vehicles serving many stops. It is the core question behind every delivery-planning tool, and every dispatcher already solves a version of it, usually by hand and by habit.

The problem is harder than it looks. The VRP is NP-hard, which means the number of possible route combinations explodes as stops are added.
